Designer Profile: Ellen DeGeneres

History

 

Born 1958 in Metairie, Louisiana, Ellen DeGeneres has always valued self-expression through art. DeGeneres got her start by performing at stand-up comedy clubs and coffee houses. By the early 1980’s she had started touring nationally with a small group of comedians. During this time, DeGeneres would get to see the entire country and experience its beauty in a way she had never dreamed of before. She would draw on this experience when designing her furniture.

In 1998, she crossed over from live comedy to TV. Over the next decade, she would play many roles, but none more iconic than her role as Ellen in These Friends of Mine, later renamed ‘Ellen’ to honor the star's success. The show would run for 5 seasons before being canceled due to a drop in ratings. While most people would ride on their past successes, always one for innovation DeGeneres reinvented herself as a talk show host. The Ellen DeGeneres Show premiered in 2003. It has won 25 Emmy Awards and has been nominated for countless awards over the last two decades.

In the summer of 2015, DeGeneres founded ED Ellen DeGeneres. Her show's viewers had always shown an interest in Ellen’s lifestyle and personal home décor, so this career change felt like a natural extension of her existing platform.
