With a career spanning over 30 years, Charlotte Moss is a legend in the world of interior design. She has won countless awards and honors throughout her career and was recently named one of Elle Décor’s Top Designers on their Grand Master List. But Moss did not have the traditional entry into the interior design scene. So how did Charlotte Moss become such a well-known designer? In this designer profile, we explore the background of this designer and what she is doing to inspire others to follow in her footsteps.
History
Born and raised in Richmond, Virginia, Charlotte Moss’s talent for interior design was plain to see from a young age. As a girl, she would spend hours exploring the great outdoors on horseback; this pastime would inspire the designs of her furniture in the future as she would become known for bold textural choices and stunning structural details in her pieces. However, she would not pursue this career for several decades, making her success in this field all the more impressive.
After graduating high school in 1969, Ross got her first job in an admissions office. But she was determined to see the world and gain more inspiration for her designs. After earning her bachelor's degree, she began working for VCU and went on the road to recruit prospective students. Five years later, she was ready to move on. She moved to New York and, determined to become self-sufficient, landed a position in a brokerage firm on Wall Street.
By the mid-’80s, Charlotte Moss was ready to start living her dream. She founded her interior design business and focused all of her energy on making it as successful as possible. Within her first three years as a business owner, she had built an impressive catalog of clients and began to expand her business.
Over the last 35 years, Charlotte Moss has built an extraordinary catalog of designs. She has used her experience to collaborate with various big name brands to design collections of high quality upholstered furniture, carpets, and fabrics.
Inspiration
Charlotte Moss’s designs are inspired by the unequaled comfort of the southern home. In her collaboration with Century furniture, each piece of furniture is a refreshing twist on traditional design structures. Yet, they still embrace the character of the handcrafted furniture of the past.Having found great success herself; Moss is taking active steps to inspire more young people to follow in her footsteps and join the industry. In 2003 she endowed the Charlotte Moss scholarship to the New York School of Interior Design to support the education of undergraduate students with a passion to become part of the interior design profession.
